United Way BBQ contest fires up Aug. 27
United Way of Nevada County will hold its 10th annual Backyard BBQ Competition and Car Show on Saturday, Aug. 27, at Western Gateway Park in Penn Valley.

This year’s “Grills ‘n’ Grilles” free event includes local teams competing in the Backyard BBQ contest and Kansas City Barbecue Society cooks from throughout the western U.S. will participate in the State Championship contest. They will participate in four categories: chicken, pork ribs, pork roast and beef brisket.

In addition, a car show that includes electric vehicles will be held. The daylong event starts at 9:30 a.m. with the 2nd annual Derek Sorensen Memorial Disc Golf Tournament, which includes disc golf demonstrations. The other activities start at 11 a.m.

The BBQ competition battle is similar to the types of competitions seen on the Food Network, the Travel Channel and TLC with samples from the Kansas Barbecue Society teams available for purchase by United Way of Nevada County.

Those who attend the best of Nevada County’s Backyard BBQ competition can enjoy samples and then vote for their favorite team. Other food and specialty vendors will be available, raffles will be held and a special play area for children will be set up. Western Gateway Park’s dog park, playground and bocce balls courts will be open during the event.
