Nevada County Libraries launch summer program

Nevada County Libraries will start summer reading program sign-ups the week of June 11 at the Madelyn Helling Library, Grass Valley Library, Penn Valley Station, and Bear River Station.

Kick-Off parties will be held on Wednesday, June 20. The party at Grass Valley will take place at 11 a.m. and the party at Madelyn Helling Library will be at 2 p.m. Karen Quest, America’s Funniest Cowgirl, will perform cowgirl tricks at both locations.

On Thursdays at 10 a.m., special performances will be held at either Grass Valley Library or Madelyn Helling Library. On June 28, Alison Faith Levy will perform songs, rhymes and dances at the Grass Valley Library. On July 12, the Madelyn Helling Library will host a comedy by Carnival of Chaos. On July 19, Wild Things will bring animals from around the world to the Grass Valley Library. On July 26, explore the mysteries of the universe with Mad Science at the Madelyn Helling Library.

The libraries’ regularly-scheduled preschool story times will follow the summer’s theme, “Dream Big – READ!” from June 12 through July 31, with a different focus each week. Preschool story times are held at the Madelyn Helling Library on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.

The libraries will also have take-home craft projects available at each of the library branches. In addition, volunteers will help children make a simple dream catcher at the Bear River Station on Wednesday, June 27, at 4 p.m., or at the Penn Valley Station on Wednesday, July 11, at 11 a.m.

All summer reading programming is sponsored by Friends of the Nevada County Libraries and made possible by the many volunteers.
