Paul Micsan's Local Happenings

"Last night, I saw one of the finest productions on stage since I came to Nevada County 12 years ago.

You must see NEXT TO NORMAL!

This is a monumental achievement for Ewing Ventures as well as our theatrical community. There were probably less than 50 people in the house on a Saturday night. THIS IS A CRIME! Please, don't miss this! . . . and please don't wait til the last weekend!"

~ Paul Micsan~

Rave reviews keep coming in!

~Stacey Duccini ~ I’m not normally a “theater” gal, but this play blew me away with its incredibly talented singers/actors and the amazingly honest, heart breaking and beautiful tale of a family trying their best to “be normal” in the face of heartache.

~Ken Getz ~  The music was flawless!

~ Frank Kavenik ~ (After seeing N2N at the Nevada Theatre)

Tonight for the first time I put on my Audio Technica headphones and listened to excerpts from the Broadway cast album of Next to Normal.

As both a musician and a sound technologist…..I think I personally like your production better (than the Broadway show)!

The orchestra produces a much fuller sound than on the recording…..and I hear more emotion in the voices.

Clearly it is a matter of taste…..but as a critical consumer…..I know which recording I would rather have.

I am grateful that you both chose to invest your time and your treasure in the production of Next to Normal!

~Sandra Rockman ~ Please accept my sincere appreciation for your work on Next to Normal. The performances were f%^&ing fantastic. (And you can quote me on that, if you haven’t already.) I am so impressed at the sustained intensity of such difficult subject matter, the amazing vocalizations and portrayals of character . . .  Scott (Ewing), you are one terrific casting director. Each of them was perfect for the part they played and played so well. Was impossible to have a favorite from the tightly woven ensemble because they functioned so beautifully as “one”. Please convey my deep respect to all – you two, cast, crew, Jerry (Grant) and orchestra – for a truly deep and meaningful theatrical offering to our Nevada County audiences. Hoping you get the audiences you deserve. With admiration, Sandra

~Judy Blake ~ Bravo!  Brava!  You certainly accomplished what Ewing Ventures is all about:  to engage, entertain and enlighten!  NEXT TO NORMAL  is magnificent!!!!  We loved every moment.

~Chuck Vintere ~  Scott and Lois, you not only hit the mark with "Next  to Normal", you surpassed it. FABULOUS SHOW! WOW! Everyone involved, should take a bow. Thank you.

~Shawnna Frazer ~ I went and saw Next to Normal last night. WOW. A story of Life, love, loss, and the triumph over adversity. The combination of some on Nevada County's most impressive vocalists alongside powerful orchestral accompaniment is an experience not to be missed. This show is genuinely and thoroughly impressive my friends. A story of an American family struggling with love and devotion through a multitude of real life challenges, has elements that we can all relate to. David Lynn was fun and fantastic is his portrayal of the kind and empathetic psycho-pharmacologist, and the rest of the cast was amazing as well. Not a mediocre performance in the bunch. Bevin Bell-Hall and Jed Dixon were absolutely captivating; holding the audience with jaws agape, lost in each moment of true theatrical catharsis. This is what theater is all about my friends. Go. Dont miss this show.

~Connery Michelle ~ This absolutely rocked my world. Besides the incredibly amazing talented actors and actresses, the whole idea behind the play was heart wrenching and brilliant. Please see this, it's absolutely wonderful!!

Review in the Union

by Hindi Greenberg

You don’t want to miss this play!  Ewing Ventures production of “Next To Normal” is a very ambitious undertaking, but they really hit a home run on all fronts – actors, singing, music, set, direction.  This play is what excellent community theater should be.

“Next To Normal” is a rock musical that deals with mental illness, drug abuse, and suicide and how those affect one family – not topics that musicals normally address.  I must confess that, going in, I thought the play might leave me feeling down, but when I walked out of the theater I was really elated – the music and quality and humanity of the play are so positive and it shows the love, resilience and spirit of that family.  The dialogue and song lyrics by Brian Yorkey are what people really say to each other and the music by Tom Kitt is very energizing.  The original Broadway production won three Tony awards in 2009 and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2010 – the Pulitzer Board said that the play expanded the scope of subject matter for musicals.  Without reservation, I think this is a marvelous play and a great musical.

Adding to the quality of the written dialogue/lyrics and composed score is the very talented cast.  Each actor has taken her or his part and internalized it, giving it meaning and depth.  The acting and singing are first-rate.  Bevin Bell-Hall is a stand out in both acting and singing as the mother, Diana, coping with her increasing bi-polar disease and the medical establishment’s attempts to treat it.  Her loyal husband, Dan, is feelingly portrayed and wonderfully sung by the talented Jed Dixon.  Their two children are powerfully acted and sung by Erik Smith as Gabe and Kendra Scott as Natalie – you will recognize the universal trials and tribulations of youth in these two.  And Nathaneal Kavenik as Natalie’s boyfriend Henry, and David Lynn playing both doctors who Diana consults for her illness, contribute their versatile acting and vocal talents to the show.

One of the big reasons the show comes together is the excellent musical direction by Jerry Grant.  He has put together a stellar group of musicians, who play onstage but behind a gauzy curtain, to bring out the best in the rock – but tender – musical aspects of the show.  And tying both the superb music and the outstanding acting together is Scott Ewing, whose direction of the entire production is spot – on.  Aided by the seemingly simple, but superior set design and lighting by John “Bear” Kelley and creative sound design by Franklin Williams, the audience feels like a part of the dynamics of the story.

Again, I’ll say that I was initially quite concerned about having to see and then write about this show – what if it was a downer or poorly done?  But I can’t recommend this play highly enough.  Ewing Ventures met the challenge of the script and music and acting and produces a clear-cut winner.  Definitely go see “Next To Normal,” playing at the Nevada Theatre through June 24th.
