Stray Cuts Salon owner celebrates 27 years in Nevada City
Nyla is a third generation Nevada City resident. Her family tree started here with the Cornish hard rock miners who came during the gold rush.
Stray Cuts Salon in Nevada City is right up there with Friar Tucks and Utopian Stone when it comes to running a successful business in town for a long time.
Nyla Haddy entered the scene in her current role as salon owner 27 years ago when she co-owned Charlie’s on Commercial Street. That business stayed in that location for nine years until she opened Nyla’s Glamorama on Pine Street, across from the courthouse.
Shortly afterward, Stray Cuts salon opened at the top of Broad Street and then 11 years ago Nyla and her business partner, Cheryl LaBrie, moved the salon to its current location in the old carriage barn at 215 Sacramento Street. The business was renamed Stray Cuts & Company.
Aptly named, Stray Cuts & Company employs 14 people and it’s always fun to walk in even if you don’t have an appointment.
“I love what I do. I have great people to work with. We have a lot of fun and we want our clients to have fun, too,” Nyla said.
Not only do they have fun but they are all professionals and each have a specialty they share with clients, be it coloring techniques, make-up consultation, wedding parties, or basically whatever you need.
On staff are 11 hair stylists, one manicure/pedicure technician and, of course, her sister, Jeanna, without whom Nyla says she would be certifiably crazy. Nyla likes to keep her family close and employs her sister to keep the salon spotless.
Nyla is a third generation Nevada City resident. Her family tree started in Nevada City with the Cornish hard rock miners who came here during the gold rush. She has children and grandchildren and that makes five generations of her family that have called either Nevada City or Grass Valley home.
When Nyla is away from her salon, she and her husband, Leon Shoenhair, rescue mustangs and they now have two mustangs. She started rescuing dogs and raising show-quality Akitas years ago, but she has since retired from the dog show circuit.
