Music school opens in Nevada City

All is not doom and gloom on the education front in Nevada County — a new music school is opening in Nevada City.

The Greenhouse School of Music, a non-profit music school organized by local business people, aims to provide a comprehensive music education to children and adults in the community.

The goal of the school is to cover all aspects of the music business. In addition to classes in a variety of instruments and vocal styles for both individuals and groups, there will also be instruction in music theory, composition, song writing, electronic studio production and performance.

Technical classes that are geared toward job placement include hands-on stagehand classes, live sound, sound and video recording and editing. There will also be movement and rhythm classes for infants and toddlers.

All classes, workshops and camps will be taught by both local and visiting professional musicians. As the program progresses, music education will be brought into the schools through volunteer docents and field trips.

“The Greenhouse School of Music will fill an important need for kids here in Nevada County,” said Stu Wolfson, who owns Maiden Lane on Broad Street and is the president of the Board. “Music speaks to all ages and is an especially powerful means of expression for kids. With unavoidable cutbacks in school programs, we felt it necessary to provide quality, comprehensive educational opportunities for our kids — either for their own enrichment, or as preparation for careers in the music business.”

 The school’s hours are expected to from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday 10 a.m.

The school is located at 138 New Mohawk Road in Nevada City and can be reached at calling 530-265-8200 or by visiting www.greenhouseschoolofmusic.org.
