The Friendship Club girls are the January “Artists of the Month” at the Nevada City Winery at 321 Spring Street.
During the month, 20 photos taken by 11 Friendship Club girls will be on exhibit. The photos, which were framed by Nevada City Picture Framing, are for sale, with the proceeds benefitting The Friendship Club programs.
The first thing visitors will notice is that the photographs have captured the brilliant natural landscape of Nevada County.
“It seems every time we have someone visit for the first time, they are genuinely amazed that our girls took the photos,” said Friendship Club middle school coordinator Denise Tambasco who, along with volunteer Fred Hall, instructed the girls on the finer points of camera work at a summer photography workshop. “What makes the exhibit special is that we’re able to celebrate their talent plus help raise money to assist our mission.”
The Friendship Club’s mission is to engage, educate and empower girls. Since 1995, it has been helping girls in the sixth through 12th grades with a year-round program of after-school tutoring, one-on-one mentoring, cultural field trips, peer support, community service opportunities and a full summer enrichment program.
The summer clinic series offers girls the opportunity to explore their interests and develop and hone their skills.
“Participating in these clinics often gives girls the confidence to continue their exploration during their high school years, joining classes and clubs that may have seen too intimidating to explore in the past. The Friendship Club encourages girls to reach beyond their comfort zones and learn to embrace the possibilities before them,” said Executive Director Jennifer Singer. “This photography exhibit is another example of how The Friendship Club integrates our girls into our community, giving them a sense of belonging and pride.”
