Congratulations are in order to all the winners of the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce 2009 Achievement Awards:

Pat and Diane Dyer, owners of the Utopian Stone, win their 2009 Stan Hall Architectural Award for the gorgeous expansion and renovation they have done to their store located at 301 Broad Street.

This year’s Elza Kilroy award for outstanding community service goes to Duane Strawser, owner of Tour of Nevada City Bicycle Shop, 2009 President of the Board of Directors for the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, promoter of the Nevada City Bicycle Classic, arranger of the 2010 AMGEN/Nevada City partnership - to name just a few - but most importantly, husband to Connie and the father of two. Congratulations Duane. You deserve this award and more.

Local stone mason and stone artist Dan Reinhart wins the New Construction Award.  Dan’s work is seen all over town..,in short, if you see a beautiful stone wall, structure or pathway, Dan did it.  His latest structural contribution is in the form of a second unit located at 347 Nimrod Street.  Check it out.

The performing arts have always been alive in Nevada City and in large part thanks to Tom Taylor, winner of the Dr. Leland and Sally Lewis Performing Arts Award. Tom is instrumental in helping our local community theatre and was an Associate Artist with the Foothill Theatre Company.

Also recognized are the Nevada City Film Festival with the Dr. Leland and Sally Lewis Visual Arts Award and the Nevada County Concert Band for the Live Music Award.

You can meet the winners on the evening they receive their awards at this year’s Nevada City Chamber Installation Dinner to be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, at the old Stonehouse Restaurant. The dinner will be prepared by the new Stonehouse Academy. For reservations, tickets and more information contact the Chamber office at 265-2692. Reservations need to be made by Jan 15.

The Nevada City Rotary Club turned out Nov. 18 to collect food from SPD shoppers for the Interfaith Food Bank in Grass Valley. In four hours the club collected an estimated $1,500 in non-perishable food items and $450 in cash donations. This is a great example of community at work for those less fortunate. Thanks to SPD for the opportunity and location, and thanks to the very generous shoppers who at some points brought out entire grocery sacks full of food aside from their own to donate.  Another food drive is in the works for February when the holiday giving may be close to being depleted.

And finally some personal congratulations:

Congratulations to Judi and Bob Weiner, owners of Judi’s of Nevada City, on the birth of their new granddaughter in the Bay Area.

Congratulations to Peggy and Bob Wright (owner of the sweetest new business in town, Treats) as they await the arrival of a grandchild in March. Keep us posted Peggy and Bob.

Happy Holidays everyone. The next edition of the Nevada City Advocate will be on the streets on Thursday, Feb. 4
