Nevada City street crew removes stop signs from Pine Street bridge

The change is apparently causing some confusion for drivers who have become accustomed to the stop signs. Tom Grundy of Nevada City reports that he has seen a number of drivers continue to stop at both ends of the bridge.

Nevada City street crews have removed the stop signs at both ends of Pine Street bridge.

The crews did the work last week when Pine Street was closed for two days. In that time, they replaced the stop signs with 15 mph speed-limit signs.

According to City Engineer Bill Falconi, the stop signs were installed years ago for the old Pine Street Bridge, which could not support two lanes filled with traffic.

"People will tell you that it used to shake when you walked across it," Falconi said today.

The bridge was replaced in 1996 and there's "no limits on traffic now," he said.

City Manager and Police Chief Lou Trovato made the decision to remove the stop signs, Falconi said.
