Although many believe 13 to be unlucky, the ancient Greeks, Israelites, Egyptians and pre-Columbian Mexican cultures all believed 13 to be an especially lucky number as do present day Chinese, Italians and Wiccans.
Although he claims to not be particularly superstitious, actor and creator of the Haunted Nevada City and Grass Valley historical walking tours, Mark Lyon, hopes the number will be lucky for him as he looks forward to his thirteenth year of October ghost tours.
“When I offered my first tours back in 2004, I had no idea that I would still be offering ghost tours all of these years later or that this would grow to become three separate tours,” Lyon said. “I had been collecting and telling ghost stories all my life and thought it might be fun to offer tours that year combining history, true local ghost stories and a bit of street theatre.”
Lyon will offer three separate tours this year – two in Nevada City and one in Grass Valley – starting on Sept. 30 and continuing through October.
“As I gathered new stories over the years and added them to my Nevada City tour, the tour became far too long, especially for young children on what can often be very cold October nights,” he said. “So, I decided to split the tour into two separate tours, which allows me to still tell all of the stories without sacrificing any of the important details as well as to add some new stories.”
The five Haunted Grass Valley tours, which include a lengthy stop at the Holbrooke Hotel, will depart at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays starting Sept. 30 from the steps of the Grass Valley Library. Haunted Nevada City Broad Street tours will depart at 7:30 p.m. every Saturday in October from 210 Broad St. (across the street from the National Hotel). Haunted Nevada City Chinese Quarter/Commercial Street tours will depart from 315 Commercial St. (Commercial at York) on the last four Sunday evenings in October.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under and children 5 and younger are admitted free. Reservations are not taken. Guests need merely to show up at the tour departure location. Private tours are available, too. For more information, call 530-265-6877 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
