Center for Sustainable Living explores our relationship with the one resource that all life requires — water. The exhibit takes you on a journey through the various concentric “zones” from the individual rippling out to state and federal water policy. Each “zone” helps us to identify the challenges we face and the solutions being employed toward a more sustainable water future. “For example, did you know that installing a grey-water catchment system at your home is now legal without a permit?” asks Center Director Mali Dyck. “Or that lawns in the United States consume around 270 billion gallons of water a week — enough to water 81 million acres of organic vegetables, all summer long,” explains Exhibit Coordinator Tania Carlone. The exhibit will also provide tips and gadget ideas to help you conserve water at home, such as using buckets instead of the hose, no-cost toilet retrofits to save water, and pouring dirty water on houseplants. This month’s special events at the APPLE Center include: The water exhibit’s opening reception is from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13. Steve Rothert from American Rivers will be the guest speaker.
