The parade is just one slice of a weekend-long celebration of history that starts with a Civil War battle at 1 p.m. on Saturday and ends Sunday afternoon with the parade of more than 100 units on Broad Street. In the year after a presidential election, tradition calls for the new president to lead the Famous Marching Presidents. This year, Nevada County Clerk-Recorder Greg Diaz and his wife, Katherine, will march as President Obama and the First Lady. Bo, the First Family’s new puppy, will be represented by Pepper of Nevada City. The Famous Marching Presidents represent each of the 44 presidents and their first ladies, which is one of the highlights of a parade that includes floats, fire trucks and the Ophir Prison Marching Band. It starts at 2 p.m. Sunday. Nevada City Police Chief Lou Trovato and his wife, Waynette, are the co-grand marshals of the parade along with Napa’s William Robertson, the grand commander of the California Knights Templar. The weekend history binge starts with a Civil War battle re-enactment at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pioneer Park in Nevada City. The American Civil War Association is bringing 400 re-enactors here who will set up camp and fight three battles over two days. Schedule of events Saturday 7-10:30 a.m.: All-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at Seaman’s Lodge, 425 Nimrod Street. 11 a.m.: 49er Rotary Club Duck Race at 11 a.m. at plaza near Deer Creek. 1 p.m.: American Civil War Association battle re-enactment at Pioneer Park. 4 p.m.: American Civil War Association battle re-enactment at Pioneer Park. 5:30-7 p.m.: Nevada County Concert Band performs on North Pine Street. 5:30-8:30 p.m. Classic Car Showcase on Broad Street.
