Harris announces plans to seek re-election to Nevada City council
Sally Harris, who was originally elected in 2004, is now finishing the term of Sheila Stein, who was elected in 2006 to the City Council. Harris was appointed by her fellow councilors to finish the final two years of Stein’s term.
Nevada City Councilor Sally Harris has announced that she will seek a third term on the council.
Harris is now finishing the term of Sheila Stein, who was elected in 2006 to the City Council. She was elected in 2008 to finish the final two years of Stein’s term.
Harris was initially elected to the council in 2004.
In her announcement, Harris cited as accomplishments in a press release: the city receiving a $510,000 grant to hire two police officers and a records clerk for two years, securing funding for job creation, protecting residents from the Deer Creek Park II project, the upgrading of the waste water treatment plant and the use of the voter-approved Measure S sales tax revenue to continue with street improvements.
In a published report, Harris said Wednesday that “people love it here and don’t want it to change too much. I want to protect it and preserve it while enhancing our financial position.”
There are two seats up for election on the Nevada City council. The seat held by Barbara Coffman, who was first elected in 2006, is the second seat. She has not publicly stated if she will seek re-election.
The election will be held on June 8.
Nevada City Deputy City Clerk Corey Shaver says city council candidates can file to run from Feb. 16 to March 12 unless an incumbent decides not to seek re-election. The filing period is then extended to March 17.
In order to run for a four-year term as a city councilor, a candidate needs to submit a petition signed by at least 20 registered Nevada City voters and live in a three-digit address, Shaver said.
