Diaz announces plans to run for Nevada County clerk-recorder
Nevada County Clerk-Recorder and its top elections official announed Monday that he is running for the office in the June 8 election. He was appointed to the position in 2007 by the Board of Supervisors. Here's the complete text of his announcement.
"I will become a candidate for the position of Nevada County Clerk-Recorder at the opening of filing for office, Tuesday. February 16," Gregory Diaz said Monday. Diaz is the current Clerk-Recorder.
Appointed by unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors in 2007, Diaz replaced Kathleen Smith who was discovered to be holding a second job in another town. Since then he has solved existing problems in the office and instituted numerous improvements, supporters said.
“Having known Greg Diaz for the last 20 years, I can say that he is one of the most knowledgeable county Clerk-Recorders in the state,” former Clerk-Recorder Bruce Bolinger said.. “Since he was selected to head Nevada County's office, he has implemented one of the most advanced recording systems in the country, while at the same time modernizing the Elections part of the office to meet the ever more stringent federal and state standards and improve service to voters.”
Diaz’s candidacy also is endorsed by Nevada County Supervisor Nate Beason, who said, “Greg has done an exemplary job in bringing stability, order and transparency to an office left in confusion and disarray after the abandonment of it by his predecessor. His sense of fairness and ethical conduct has been amply demonstrated by his meticulous, objective adherence to election laws and procedures and by his commitment to ensuring that voters in Nevada County enjoy unfettered access to the exercise of their rights.” Beason represents residents in the First District.
Former Grass Valley Mayor Mark Johnson and former Nevada City Mayor Steve Cottrell have both endorsed Diaz, as has current Nevada City Vice Mayor Robert Bergman, who said, “I wholeheartedly support Greg. He should continue his fine work as the County’s Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters.”
Using new technology, Diaz has implemented an improved recording system for vital records, surpassing previous service levels using fewer resources. The benefits to Nevada County citizens are timely and accurate recording of documents. In addition he has delivered five trouble-free elections to the voters of Nevada County.
Diaz served as the Clerk-Recorder for the City and County of San Francisco for eight years. During the time he managed that office he defined departmental policies, procedures, budget, operations and participated in creation of legislation on both the local and state levels. Before that he worked in the San Francisco City Attorney’s office for six years drafting legislation and litigation documents.
“I am running on the premise that experience makes the difference,” Diaz said. “Commitment, experience, and integrity - I have been able to bring them all to the job of Clerk-Recorder. I believe the residents of Nevada County want to keep those qualities in their government, to protect the integrity of their votes and their records.”
Diaz, his wife Katherine, and two daughters have lived in southern Nevada County since 2003, where they raise Alpacas.
